Q: Does this Dyson model vacuum shag carpeting? I tried the V15 model and it did not. It was amazing on hard surface flooring but when I tried it on carpeting with a thick pile, it did not work.

Q: Does this model have an on/off switch or do you have to keep holding down the "on" button the entire time while using it ( like a "Deadman's switch" ) ?

After having a 'Dyson' with HEPA filter for years, I have moved onto the Gen5detect with HEPA filtration. Although I've only had it a short while, I am very impressed with the manoeuvrability and performance. Although I do not think the brush on the small inline attachment is up to the job, it needs more bristles, likewise the other brush that came with it. I am used to the stronger brush attachment with my 'old' machine. I have bought a few more attachments, though. The 70minute run time is only for ECO mode: 39 on medium. I have always hoovered my mattresses when making the beds, if I haven't then the job is not complete. I like seeing the dust gathered, so I can empty the container regularly. Overall, I am really impressed with the Gen5detect and highly recommend it.

Fantastic performance. This was a replacement for a decent vacuum but the tank drove me crazy with having to empty it so often. OMG the stuff it that came out of my carpet was unbelievable. Great battery, good sized tank, lots of useful attachments and easy to use. It’s a little bit heavier but the performance outweighs how good this machine works. I would recommend to anyone.

I received this Gen5detect and have very mixed feelings about it. My old machine had a larger dust chamber and a trigger handle. It was easy to use and clean our apartment on a single charge and a nearly full dust chamber. The trigger handle was particularly useful the working around furniture or around doors. The Gen5detect provided useful information on the dust collected but the dust chamber was too small for our apartment. The need to operate the machine using too hands was very frustrating. While the machine did a very good job and I enjoy Dyson products (I have purchased about 7 machines) this model would not be my choice.

I am very happy with my stick vacuum cleaner. I love the blue light. It has to see the dust. The only thing I found is that only being a day or two old and the purple long pole has already scratched for the price you pay disappointed that It has scratched so easily in such a short time It must have a very thin layer of paint.

The extra dirt capacity, the longer battery charge, not having to hold the trigger to keep it running. Having the crevis tool in the handle is a bonus. Only time will tell if I still feel pleased with it in 12 months.

The green light dust detector is addictive - a really good addition. However, it's nigh on impossible to reach right under beds and sofas with this Dyson model. You have to perform some kind of Pilates floor exercise to manoeuvre the extension and brush head for low reach. Disappointing.

We’ve had Dyson vacuum cleaners right from the first one, this is only our third main vacuum cleaner in all that time (since 1993), we only changed because of moving into a new house with the whole ground floor being a hard floor, so the “Fluffy Optic” head being a real game changer! It works brilliantly, (although I think it could have two green lasers, one on each side of the head) The Hepa Filter and dust monitor screen is very good, my Wife and Daughter have competitions to see who can collect the most dust particles! It’s simply a Fantastic bit of kit, the run time is amazing too. Just go out and buy one, stop thinking about it and do it, you won’t regret it.

I bought my new Dyson a month ago. This is now the third Dyson that I own and they keep getting better with each generation. I use mine in my Chiropody clinic. It’s a tough tour of duty for the Dyson but cleaning up after everyone is made easy because of the power and maneuverability. Dose the job and more.
